The outcome of the legislative elections in France exalts the left in Italy, not used to winning and now – while their ride towards Palazzo Chigi is still a long way off – they look to their cousins across the Alps as models. The first to sing the praises of the New Popular Front and also of Emmanuel Macron, despite the results, is the former Prime Minister and expert on French affairs, Enrico Letta.
“France took a big risk and with it Europe – the MP began in a long interview with Il Corriere della Sera – I am excited. The result is much better than expected and indicates that there was a surge on the part of the French”. The danger for Le Pen and Rassemblement National has therefore been averted. But for the former prime minister, Macron is also a supporter of the success despite his political strength being greatly reduced by the polls.
“Macron will be on the scene anyway,” he explains, “he will be the one to give the mandate and the vote says that they must find a broad coalition. Without vetoes and without using the club once morest each other.” For the Dem, in any case, the future for France and Europe is certainly not without risks. If Jean-Luc Mélenchon and whoever will form the next government with him were to fail, “it would be the best way to help Le Pen win the presidential elections.”
Less Macronian were the statements of his secretary, Elly Schlein, who commented on the result of the polls by speaking of “an extraordinary result for the united left, a beautiful response of participation” and failing to mention the current president of the French republic. Giuseppe Conte did the same. The president of the M5s underlined how the French have “rewarded the popular and progressive proposal” by giving “a signal of democratic push that today speaks to the whole of Europe”.

On the same wavelength as Letta was Carlo Calenda of Azione who rejoiced for Macron’s “holding firm” and recalled, perhaps mindful of some unsuccessful left-wing government experiments in Italy, the difficulties of the future: “Forming a government and governing will not be easy”. This time, his former ally Italia Viva also agreed with him, through Raffaelle Paita: “Macron’s move proved to be a winning one in preventing the extremists of Bardella and Le Pen from obtaining an absolute majority. And to think that there were those who thought he was dead”.
“In France, the New Popular Front is saving the Republic from the assault of the far right,” commented Nicola Fratoianni of Avs. “In the meantime, this is great news for tonight. And also an indication of hope.” As a true ultra, the reaction to the vote of Angelo Bonelli of Verdi and the left. Once the Marseillaise, the French national anthem, was sung, the dedication: “This is dedicated to Meloni and Salvini,” says Bonelli. “The great red-green result of NFP in France. United we win. Now we must move forward in Italy for a democratic, anti-fascist, progressive and ecologist alliance to oust the far right from government.”
The left is therefore galvanized and in full swing by the results across the Alps, but it’s a shame that their game is still far from the results and success of the New Popular Front.
