MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— Julen Rementería, coordinator of the PAN in the Senate of the Republic, denied that his party is divided following the “verbal fencing” on social networks between former president Felipe Calderón and the national leader of the PAN, Marko Cortés, due to the poor results of the June 2 election.
In an interview, the legislator from Veracruz stated that the National Action Party is going through a period of reflection and is carrying out an analysis of what happened in the electoral process.
Rementeria del Puerto acknowledged that it does not benefit the PAN that internal matters are aired in public, because that is what the General Council sessions are for, such as the one on Saturday.
“There you can say what you have to say, always with respect, right? Because doing it outside the party does not benefit the party and does not help at all.” He insisted that there is no division or fracture in the party. “There are people who find or have different ways of seeing things, but that does not mean that the PAN is divided, that it is destroying itself.”
Reinvent yourself or die
Damián Zepeda, a PAN senator, spoke in practically the same tone as the coordinator of National Action in the Senate.
“That a presidential candidate has had 60% of the votes, in this case Claudia Sheinbaum, has not been seen for 42 years in Mexico. You have to go to Miguel de la Madrid to find a defeat or a victory as abysmal as this one. The worst result we have had in the recent history of the country. I really don’t know where they are. That is why I invite the PAN to reflect. We are not here to celebrate. We are here to reinvent ourselves or die,” she said.
Zepeda stressed that the PAN has to open itself to the citizens and that the people choose who they want to be the next national leader of the party, so that it has popular support. The former PAN leader assured that the PAN has an owner and controls the membership registry.
“That is not free democracy. So, that is why we have to break that pattern. Of course there are free, independent PAN members, but they are a minority. There is a controlled registry. There are 277 thousand people in the PAN because they are not allowed to join freely. Imagine a party with 277 thousand members that wants to represent the majority of a country when the country has 130 million Mexicans. What is happening is ridiculous,” said the PAN senator.
