Argentina Officializes “Open Skies” Policy

The Government led by Javier Miley has made its “open skies” policy official through a decree published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday. This decree seeks to deregulate Argentina’s commercial aviation market.

The Open Skies Policy will promote fair competition, eliminate tariff regulations and allow freedom to set prices. It will also establish safeguards and operational surveillance measures, and leave the setting of frequencies and air routes in the hands of airlines.

“This measure reforms archaic measures that have been in place in Argentina for decades. This is a very important step towards the modernization and liberalization of airspace,” said presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni, during his usual appearance at the Casa Rosada, the seat of the Executive.

The decree of Milei’s ultra-liberal government highlights that State interventions are “restricted” and that authorizations are granted immediately, along with the requested frequencies, throughout the Argentine territory.

In addition, this measure will allow more companies to provide ramp services, and each airline will be able to choose the company it wants for this service, instead of being limited to one company exclusively.
