NEWLY elected Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced the members of his ministerial team. Starmer was elected British Prime Minister following the centre-left Labour Party won a landslide victory in the general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule.

Starmer on Friday (July 5) appointed Rachel Reeves as finance minister, the first woman to hold the post in British history. The former child chess champion and Bank of England economist has promised to grow the country’s economy while demonstrating strong fiscal discipline.

“It is the honor of my life to be appointed chancellor of the exchequer,” Reeves wrote on the social media platform X.

“To every girl and young woman reading this, let this day show that your ambitions should not be limited,” she added.

Starmer appointed David Lammy, a decorated MP, as foreign secretary.

Born to Guyanese immigrants, Lammy grew up in Tottenham, a north London borough, where he has represented Parliament since 2000.

Lammy became the youngest Member of Parliament (MP) when he was first elected at the age of 27. He quickly gained ministerial experience, serving in the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

Lammy on Friday reiterated his support for international efforts to secure an immediate ceasefire in Israel’s war on Gaza and for the release of the remaining hostages following he was appointed foreign minister.

The 51-year-old said he would work with tireless diplomacy to achieve the dual goals.

“We all recognize the suffering of the people who have witnessed the events taking place in Israel and Gaza,” said Lammy of the Foreign Ministry.

“But the task now is to work with tireless diplomacy to support an immediate ceasefire and move towards the release of the hostages,” he said.

Rayner appointed as Starmer’s deputy

Angela Rayner, elected deputy leader in 2020, will become Starmer’s deputy prime minister and retain her brief on levelling up, housing and communities.

He began his career as a trade union official before embarking on a career as a member of parliament.

Yvette Cooper, who served in former Labour prime minister Gordon Brown’s Cabinet between 2008 and 2010 as principal secretary to the treasury and work and pensions secretary, has been appointed home secretary.

The first surprise at Labor’s top leadership team meeting was the promotion of Lisa Nandy to culture minister following Thangam Debbonaire, who held the shadow cabinet post, lost her seat to the Greens.

Otherwise, the Cabinet will reflect Starmer’s shadow team, including Pat McFadden, who played a central role in shaping Labour’s election campaign, having been appointed chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

John Healey was appointed Defence Secretary and Shabana Mahmood was appointed Justice Secretary. Wes Streeting was appointed Health Secretary and Bridget Phillipson was appointed Education Secretary.

Ed Miliband, former Labour leader and leader of the opposition between 2010 and 2015, has been named energy secretary. Lucy Powell will become leader of the House of Commons. (Z-8)
