Photographer Monfort, 56, said the photo was taken in the locker room at Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium in the fall of 2007, when Jamal was only a few months old.
Barcelona players took photos with children and their families as part of an annual charity campaign organised by local newspaper Diario Sport and UNICEF.
Monfort was in charge of the photo shoots, and took pictures of Messi with Jamal’s family.
Jamal’s mother is from Equatorial Guinea, and was sitting next to Messi and her child in one of the photos.
Monfort recalls that the task was not easy, partly because Messi was not sure how to hold baby Lamine, who was placed in a plastic tub during the shoot.
Messi was 20 years old at the time, and had great talent, but it took two years before he made his mark as the best player of his generation with Barcelona and the Argentina national team.
It is noteworthy that Jamal is currently shining in the European Nations Cup held in Germany, where Spain will play once morest France in the semi-finals tonight, Tuesday, and on the same evening Messi will lead Argentina to face Canada in the semi-finals of the Copa America held in the United States.
