Mexico deploys 13,372 troops and soldiers in the wake of Hurricane Beryl

MEXICO CITY.—This Thursday, during the usual morning press conference, the president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorit was reported that the Government of Mexico raised the number of elements of the Armed forces and other units deployed to the huracán Berylwhich would make landfall as Category 1 hurricane in the state of Quintana Roobetween this Thursday and Friday.

“There are many public servants from all departments, of course, elements of the Navy, Defense and National Guard were mobilized, we are working in coordination with the Governor Mara Lezama (from Quintana Roo),” President López Obrador reported.

The operation now includes 4,150 soldiers and 583 Army vehicles, 4,451 officers and 713 vehicles from the National Guard, and 1,128 elements, 87 vehicles, 14 boats, three helicopters and a communications unit from the Navy, he said. Laura Velazquez, National Coordinator of Civil Protection.

Hurricane Beryl remained 80 kilometers southwest of the Cayman Islands, 620 kilometers east-southeast of Tulum and 600 kilometers east of Punta Herrero, both municipalities in Quintana Roo, according to the latest report from the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

The head of Civil Protection said that “the forecast for its entry into national territory would be during the early hours of Friday, July 5, through the central region of the state of Quintana Roo, that is, between the municipalities of Carrillo Puerto and Tulum, passing through the municipality of José María Morelos.”

“It is important to inform you that it is forecast to impact the national territory as a Category 1 hurricane,” he said.

López Obrador recalled that Beryl, the most intense hurricane for this early stage of the Atlantic season, would hit the country twice, since following leaving the Yucatan Peninsula, it would pass through the Gulf of Mexico and then hit Tamaulipas, a state bordering the United States.

“Not only is Quintana Roo being considered, but also Yucatan, and we have already begun to see all the activity that needs to be carried out in Tamaulipas,” he said.

Of the three cyclones that have occurred in the Atlantic this season, Beryl would be the third to hit Mexico, where storm Chris made landfall on Sunday and before that, on June 20, storm Alberto left six dead in Nuevo León, a state on the northern border.
