Colombia clarifies that Petro’s proposal seeks a smooth transition in Venezuela

Luis Gilberto MurilloColombia’s foreign minister, said that the proposal presented by President Gustavo Petro points to a possible Smooth transition in Venezuela following July 28 elections.

During his participation in the conference of the Council of the AmericasThe Colombian official indicated that his country is committed to a fair and problem-free electoral process in Venezuela.

The Colombian president has not been shy regarding speaking regarding Venezuela and the elections scheduled for July.

Last April, Petro and his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvathey talked regarding “the possibility of a plebiscite” to reach a “democratic pact” between the government and the opposition in Venezuela.

“I conveyed to President Lula a proposal that was transmitted to President (Nicolás) Maduro and the opposition. It has to do with the possibility of a plebiscite in the upcoming elections.” in Venezuela, said Colombian President Gustavo Petro following a meeting in Bogotá with Lula da Silva.

The referendum would take place simultaneously with the presidential elections on July 28. According to Petro, I would seek “a democratic pact” where the loser of the elections has “certainty and security regarding his life and political guarantees”.
