The tech giant is changing its guidelines on the use of the word Zionist in an attempt to balance the right to free speech once morest hateful attacks on Jews on its social media platforms.
– We will remove content that targets Zionists and uses dehumanizing comparisons regarding them, as well as posts that incite violence once morest them or deny their right to exist. We do this because Zionist in this case is often used for Jews and Israelis, says a statement from Meta.
The changes expand Meta’s approach of treating Zionist as hate speech when it is used in conjunction with anti-Semitic imagery or clearly refers to the Jewish people.
Meta says it will remove posts that attack Zionists when – instead of being linked to the political movement – they are regarding anti-Semitic stereotypes such as claims that Jews rule the world or control the media.
Zionism is a form of Jewish nationalism, which claims that the Jewish people have a right to all or parts of the historical landscape of Palestine with the emphasis on Jerusalem, defined as the land of Israel.
Meta said earlier in July that it was changing its hate speech policy and taking a more nuanced approach to whether the use of the Arabic word “shaheed,” which is commonly translated as “martyr,” is hate speech.
