I was born in Haapsalu 93 years ago and grew up on Metsa street in a two-story house at the intersection of Metsa, Tamme and Jalaka streets. 85 and more years ago, the wetland between Jalaka and Haava streets was a spring spawning ground for frogs. The ditches from the Haava intersection to the Tallinn highway were also spawning grounds for frogs. There were so many frogs that the children, including me, started to call our neighborhood Frog Village. It is a name given by the children, not a place name, and we were the children of Konnaküla.
It is a magical name that lasts from generation to generation. This name cannot be hijacked because it belongs only to frogs.
Dear Mrs. Aita Möldr, you should not be sad that there are no frogs on Kopli street now. They have never been there. There has been no frog pond or wetland for frogs on Kopli street. Frogs did not live in the reeds of Kopli Street. I myself have moved in the reeds and cut the dish.
Aita Mölder once asked me to explain the meaning of Konnaküla. I think that my knowledge might have been listened to then. Unfortunately, he did not do this, but acted on his own wisdom. This is how what is now on Kopli street came to be.
I am the last child and name giver of Konnaküla. I dare to explain: Kopli street is not Konnaküla, and I advise Mrs. Aita Möldr to listen a little to what more informed people are saying, including the ladies in the picture of the June 22nd page of Lääne Elu.
