The Mercedes team racing duo, George Russel and Lewis Hamilton, will lead the Formula 1 British GP race at the Silverstone Circuit, Sunday (7/7) at 21.00 WIB from the pole position following a satisfactory qualifying result, Saturday (6/7).

At the end of the wet-dry session, Russell produced a spectacular time of 1 minute 25.819 seconds, 0.171 seconds ahead of his teammate, seven-time world champion Hamilton. McLaren driver Lando Norris was third, 0.211 behind Hamilton.

It marked Russell’s third pole position of his F1 career and his second of the 2024 season following Canada, with the 26-year-old Briton looking to make it back-to-back race wins following triumphing in Austria last week.

“It’s an amazing feeling, an amazing feeling! At the start of the year, we didn’t even dream of being on the front foot here,” Russell said, as quoted from the official Formula 1 website, Saturday (6/7).

“The car feels really, really good at the moment. It really comes alive in qualifying. Honestly, it’s a joy to drive on this circuit,” he added.

Asked how much the fans in the packed grandstands and on the grass around the track had provided encouragement this weekend, Russell said both he, Hamilton and Norris, who were riding their home race, were grateful for the energetic support.

“I don’t think Silverstone might have dreamed of three British guys in the top three,” Russell said. “To be honest, the support, we’ve loved it, and we can’t wait for tomorrow’s race.”

Meanwhile, Hamilton also agreed with Russell that he was very proud that three British drivers, including himself, would start the race from the top three positions.

“We’re proud to be here. Three British players in the top three is incredible,” said Hamilton.

“A big congratulations to George. He did an incredible job. We certainly didn’t expect to be up there this weekend, but it means a lot to us, to our team,” he added.

“I think, at the end of the day, there’s still time left, which George can find, but I feel very confident regarding the car tomorrow. I think with the weather conditions we’ve got, we can work together to keep Lando at bay,” Hamilton concluded. (Ant/Z-1)
