The introduction of a new grading system designed to end unlimited correction of test grades has been delayed for a year, but some schools have already implemented it last academic year, admitting that it was the right move, writes Diena.
Overall, of the schools surveyed by the State Education Quality Service that did not do this, 5% are not ready for the new procedure, and 65% are partially ready. School leaders also indicate that the procedure should be clarified.
Fearing that not all schools are ready for the new system, it was postponed for a year, leaving it up to educational institutions to decide whether to wait for the official launch or not. Those who decided to do so have been using the new system for a year now, while the rest will have to implement it on September 1, Education and Science Minister Anda Čakša said at the Seimas Committee on Education, Science and Culture.
In August, the Ministry of Education and Science will provide education departments and schools with up-to-date information on improvements in the system, and will also conduct a survey of schools regarding what kind of support they expect from the ministry.
Head of the School 2030 Curriculum Development Department, Principal of Riga Secondary School No. 72 Pavel Pestov noted that the new system places emphasis on assessment that supports student growth rather than determining the result, and the assessment must be accurate, reflecting the student’s acquired knowledge, skills and understanding. The new system does not include assessment of diligence, behavior, homework completion by the student, but assesses his knowledge, skills and understanding.
From now on, there will be a test at the end of each topic. If at the end of the school year a student wants to improve his grade, he will be able to do so by taking a combined test designed for this purpose.
