Tunisia.. Annual inflation rises to 7.3 percent in June

Tunisia – Consumer price inflation in the Tunisian market rose to 7.3 percent year-on-year in June, from 7.2 percent in May.

This came in data published by the National Institute of Statistics yesterday on its official website.

The institute said: “Annual inflation witnessed a slight increase to 7.3 percent in June, following it was around 7.2 percent during the previous month.”

The increase in consumer prices on an annual basis was attributed to the acceleration in the rise in prices of the food and beverage group, which recorded a rise of 10.1 percent in June, compared to 9.7 percent in May.

In contrast, the rate of increase in prices of the group of restaurants, hotels and cafes services decreased to 9.9 percent in June, compared to 10.2 percent in May.

Last month, Tunisia’s central bank said it kept its key interest rate unchanged at 8 percent, a high level at which the government is seeking to restore consumer prices to a downward trajectory.

In February 2023, inflation hit a 30-year high of 10.4 percent, according to the country’s historical consumer price inflation data.

The country suffered from a severe economic crisis exacerbated by the repercussions of the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, and then the high cost of importing energy and basic materials, following the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war on February 24, 2022.
