Price increases of up to 500 percent: Consumer advocates sue EVN

The accusation: EVN did not inform its electricity and gas customers regarding price increases of up to 500 percent in autumn 2022. 800,000 electricity and 280,000 gas customers were only informed regarding the price increase when they received their annual bill, the VSV said in a press release.

EVN is calm regarding the complaint

The energy supplier is relaxed regarding the complaint, saying that it acted in accordance with the law. “The tariff in question was linked to the development of the Austrian electricity and gas price index (ÖSPI & ÖGPI) and was adjusted up or down once a year,” EVN said in a statement. When signing the contract, customers might specify in what form they wanted to be informed regarding price changes. But some customers did not use this option. “Courts have also already ruled that customers had to expect price increases in autumn 2022 due to the general situation, especially for a product with automatic price adjustment,” EVN said.
