Floods in Brazil leave 108 dead and 136 missing

The death toll in Brazil from flooding in the southern region has risen to 108, while the number of missing rose to 136 and the number of injured to 374, according to a report released Thursday by the Civil Defense.

In Rio Grande do Sul, a border area with Uruguay and Argentina, there are approximately 1.5 million people affected, as torrential rains have caused unprecedented destruction in this Brazilian state, where 107 deaths have been reported.

The other person who died was in the state of Santa Catarina, which was also affected by the intense storm of the last week, although to a lesser degree.

According to partial data from the National Confederation of Municipalities, at least 425 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul have been affected, some of which are completely submerged under water and 6,200 have been destroyed.

232 thousand people evacuated

Civil Defense also said that approximately 232,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and moved to shelters or the homes of relatives.

Hundreds of police officers, firefighters, soldiers and volunteers are still working to rescue people who are still cut off from the scene due to high water levels and who are beginning to suffer from a lack of food.

The rains of the last few hours forced the suspension of rescue work in Porto Alegre, the regional capital, where some neighborhoods are still completely flooded and the main airport will be closed at least until the end of this month.
