Mats Wieffer continues his career at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League. The 24-year-old midfielder from Feyenoord signs a five-year contract.

The buyout fee has not been disclosed, but Feyenoord says it will receive a “record amount” for Wieffer. According to several media, it is more than 30 million euros.

Wieffer came to Feyenoord from Excelsior two years ago. He played 79 times for Feyenoord and became national champion with the Rotterdam team last year. Feyenoord calls Wieffer “one of the most important pawns in the championship team”.

Brighton finished eleventh in the highest level in England last season. At the southern English club, Wieffer will meet, among others, Oranje goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, Joël Veltman and Jan Paul van Hecke.

‘It went very quickly’

Wieffer participated in Feyenoord’s first public training for the new season on Wednesday. Due to an injury, he was unable to go to the European Championship in Germany.

The midfielder has since left Rotterdam. “It all went very quickly in the past few days,” he reflects on the Feyenoord website“I hope to be able to say goodbye personally next week to the people at Feyenoord with whom I have worked so intensively over the past few years.”
