Hippindo Says Determination of Import Duty on Illegal Imports is Inappropriate – 2024-07-09 14:21:40

THE imposition of a 200% import duty on illegal imported products is considered not on target. This is the reason of the Secretary General (Sekjen) of the Indonesian Retailers and Shopping Center Tenants Association (Hippindo), Haryanto Pratantara.

“We think that if the contents are illegal imported goods, the solution is not right on target. This is because the illegal ones are not reported, the regulations are not right. So those who are affected are the legal importers, who actually pay taxes, VAT, PPh, import duties, and then on average they have offline stores and these retailers absorb a very large workforce,” said Haryanto when met in Jakarta on Friday (5/7).

As is known, Indonesia’s current condition is flooded with illegal imported products, both for ready-to-wear clothing, textiles, and so on. For example, Haryanto said Little Bangkok in Tanah Abang is believed to be a place where most or even all of the goods traded come in illegally.

“This is called illegal because one, it does not meet the regulations, what are the regulations? There is no Indonesian language label. In fact, all products must have an Indonesian language label and the label must explain who the importer is. Then there are also those that must have standards such as SNI and others. The items I mentioned do not have that. It is clearly illegal,” he explained.

He assessed that the regulations set by the government to block illegal import activities are currently still not strong. He hopes that in the future the regulations issued by the government are effective regulations. This means that they are right on target for imports that should be limited or prohibited, but the retail industry can still run well.

“So illegal imports will not be able to thrive if the government’s enforcement is also strong once morest illegal goods circulating in the community,” he said. (Z-2)
