US grants Poland $2 billion loan to meet military needs

The ministry said in a statement: “The United States announces that it has reached an agreement with Poland to grant it a second loan worth two billion dollars for military needs.”

The Foreign Ministry said the decision would help strengthen NATO’s eastern flank and help Poland in its steps to modernize its military program, including the purchase of F-35 fighter jets, Patriot air defense systems and Abrams tanks from the United States.

In late May, Poland announced it planned to buy long-range missiles from the United States worth €677 million to “strengthen its defence capabilities.”

In March, the US State Department announced that the United States had approved the sale to Poland of a US missile system worth a total of approximately $3.7 billion.

As part of the agreements with Warsaw, 821 AGM-158B-2 JASSM high-precision cruise missiles, 745 AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM medium-range air-to-air missiles, and 232 AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II short-range missiles will be transferred, along with launchers and training missiles, as well as classified test equipment and software, personnel training, transportation, and the provision of spare parts and maintenance.

Poland’s arsenal currently includes this type of missile, which has a range of 370 kilometers, and is used by its F-16 aircraft.

Warsaw has boosted its defence budget to around four percent of GDP, the highest figure among NATO countries.

It also launched a series of multibillion-dollar purchases of military equipment, mostly from the United States and South Korea.
