Venezuela’s opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia denounced on Monday that the government of Nicolás Maduro closed a restaurant in the state of Cojedes (center) that served him last Sunday when he was returning from a political event, as part of the campaign for the elections of July 28.

“They closed the restaurant ‘Asados Taguanes’ in Cojedes, where my family and I ate on our way back to Caracas. Why punish the workers for welcoming those who think differently? I hug them and thank them for their cordial attention with a smile and a lot of hope,” said the former ambassador in X.

The candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) recalled that this case “adds to others that demonstrate the disrespect of power towards Venezuelans,” in reference to another 16 establishments that – according to anti-Chavez supporters – were closed or inspected in recent weeks by the Executive, following receiving González Urrutia or the opposition leader María Corina Machado.

“Rest assured that respect and peace will come,” added the opposition member, who shared photographs of the place where the stickers of the National Integrated Service of Customs and Tax Administration (Seniat) can be seen, which establish a closure until July 26.

According to complaints from the PUD and non-governmental organizations such as Acceso a la Justicia, the tax agency has “sanctioned” several businesses, mainly hotels and restaurants, for receiving or serving anti-Chavez leaders, alleging a lack of documentation or records.
