Oskar Korshunov’s “Othello” is presented at the famous Sofia Theater Festival Culture

World Theater in Sofia is the main theater art platform in Bulgaria, which aims to annually present the latest trends in world theater and the names and troupes creating those trends. In sixteen years, the festival has already featured such names as Declan Donnellan (Great Britain), Pippo Delbono (Italy), Ivo van Hove (Netherlands), Robert Willson (USA), Eugenio Barba (Italy), Milo Rau (Switzerland), Jan Fabre (Belgium), Romeo Castellucci (Italy). The organization organizing the festival “Via Fest” is also organizing another no less important event in parallel – the “Varna Summer” festival, which is being held for the 32nd time.

Together with O. Koršunov and his “Othello” this year’s festival program includes directors and troupes from France, Spain, Switzerland, Hungary, Estonia and China. The performance of the Lithuanian director will be shown on the main stage of Sofia – the National Theater named following Ivan Vazov.

The title of “The Seagull” by O. Koršunov is also mentioned in the program of “World Theater in Sofia”. Festival guests will have the opportunity to see a video of this performance.

“World Theater in Sofia” is already the sixth international festival abroad where “Othello” is presented. His international debut took place at the Shakespeare Festival in Gdańsk (Poland). The play was also presented at Temporada Alta festival in Girona (Spain), Craiova Shakespeare Festival (Romania), Open The Door festival in Katowice (Poland) and MESS festival in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina).

Tours in Sarajevo were marked with three main awards of the festival – golden laurel wreaths. “Otelas” was awarded the grand prize of the festival and recognized as the best performance of the festival. The golden laurel wreath went to Oskar Koršunov, recognized as the best director of the festival. Saulius Ambrozaitis, who created the role of Iago, became the best actor of the festival.

In autumn, the Othello troupe is waiting for its seventh festival – “Les Boreales” in Cannes (France). This performance will be part of the Lithuanian season in France 2024.

Those who want to see “Othello” in Lithuania will have the opportunity this summer. July 22 the performance will be shown in the courtyard of the Palace of Lords, in the program of the “Midsummer Vilnius” festival.
