DANBURY, Conn. (AP) — Longtime President Donald Trump ally Steve Bannon reported to a federal prison in Connecticut on Monday to serve a four-month sentence for contempt of court for failing to comply with a subpoena in the congressional investigation into the attack on the Capitol.
Bannon arrived at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, around noon and was officially placed into federal custody, the Bureau of Prisons said.
Speaking to reporters, Bannon called himself a “political prisoner,” said former President Donald Trump had given him “great support” and lashed out at Democrats, including Attorney General Merrick Garland.
“I’m proud to go to prison,” Bannon said, adding that he was taking on “Garland’s corrupt Justice Department.”
Shortly before arriving at the prison, a group of supporters — including Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene — gathered on the side of the road in front of the facility. They cheered and cheered as Greene and Bannon spoke at a news conference, waving flags and signs in support of Bannon.
Another group of protesters shouted “Lock him up!” and “Traitor!”
The crowd was disorderly and at times shouted “USA!”
A supporter of Democratic President Joe Biden yelled “Traitor!” at Bannon as Trump supporters tried to shout louder.
Police had to stop traffic to allow the van carrying Bannon to enter.
A judge allowed Bannon to remain free for nearly two years during his appeal but ordered him to report to prison yesterday following an appeals court upheld his contempt of Congress convictions.
The Supreme Court rejected his last appeal, which sought to avoid serving his sentence.
Another Trump aide, trade adviser Peter Navarro, was also convicted of contempt of Congress. He reported to prison in March to serve his four-month sentence.
