Government guarantees road access works for the Yakye Axa indigenous community in Chaco

Asuncion, IP Agency.- District No. 15 of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications is carrying out embankment and profiling work, which allows for the road connection of the Yakye Axa community with Kelyenmagategma, known as Karajá Vuelta, located on the banks of the Paraguay River and which previously lacked an access road. This road section is a fundamental part of the measures imposed by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) ruling.

The initiative not only demonstrates the commitment of the Government, through the MOPC, to comply with international obligations, but also highlights the determination to guarantee access and quality of life for historically marginalized communities.

The ministry stresses that its conclusion is of profound public interest due to its direct social impact and its political and diplomatic implications.

At the same time, the Rutas del Norte Consortium is carrying out improvement work on the first 33 kilometers of the route, which requires an investment of G. 8,251,616,824, financed by the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF).

The Yakye Axa community, belonging to the Enxet People, is made up of some 60 families (more than 300 people) who have lived for decades on the side of the PY05 Pozo Colorado – Concepción route, at Km 349, in the department of Presidente Hayes.

Road construction to the Yakye Axa indigenous community is progressing as planned and covers the section from kilometer 10.4 to kilometer 33.4 of the Pozo Colorado – Concepción corridor, Paraguayan Chaco.

The interventions are part of MOPC’s efforts to develop infrastructures that benefit all communities in the country, including those in remote areas.
