The number of tourists who entered Mexico by air between January and May 2024 grew 5.5% (10.16 million people) compared to 2023, revealed the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) of the federal government.
The department highlighted that this category grew by 19.8% compared to arrivals in the same months of 2019, when the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador was beginning.
The United States, Canada and Colombia (more than 8.43 million people) led the tourism that chose destinations in the country in the first five months of the year.
The bulk of visitors were Americans (6,248,000), followed by Canadians (1,537,000) and, lastly, Colombians (257,273).
The Mexican airports with the highest number of tourist arrivals in the first five months of 2024 were Cancún, Mexico City International Airport, and Los Cabos Airport.
In total, they attracted 7,508,000 tourists, a figure that grew by 3% compared to the same period in 2023.
Of the three, Cancun airport was the one that received the largest number of tourists, 4,684,000, followed by the capital (1,765,000) and Los Cabos (1,059,000).
In the words of the federal Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco, Mexico’s connectivity is a “cornerstone” of tourism and he celebrated that it has experienced a “notable increase” during the López Obrador administration.— EFE
