Nothing has finally released its long-awaited smartphone. Introducing the Nothing CMF Phone 1, a budget-friendly smartphone that lets you customize its look by swapping out its back cover. But that’s not all.

Nothing, best known for its headphones and smartphones, has launched CMF, a brand dedicated to affordable products. CMF is now entering the smartphone market with the CMF Phone 1, priced €100 lower than the Nothing Phone (2a).

Simple and Removable Design: The Recipe for the CMF Phone 1

The CMF Phone 1’s plastic back cover can be easily removed. Just unscrew five screws, and you can swap it out. However, this doesn’t grant access to the phone’s components or battery, which is a bit of a letdown, especially considering Nothing’s promotional materials.

The main purpose of the removable back cover is to change the phone’s aesthetic. You can purchase the smartphone in one of four colors, or buy a new back cover in a different color. This allows you to switch up the look of your phone without needing a bulky and occasionally unsightly protective case. However, according to a recent survey of our readers, many people still prefer using protective cases.

Another unique feature is the “wheel” located on the bottom right corner of the back cover. It functions as a fifth screw and allows you to attach accessories. CMF offers a strap, card holder, and stand that can be attached to this screw. Initially, we thought the “wheel” was software-based and would trigger specific actions, but that isn’t the case.

The CMF Phone 1 features a 6.67-inch AMOLED LTPS display with a 1080×2400-pixel resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It offers P3 color coverage and HDR10+ support. The phone runs Nothing OS 2.6, based on Android 14, providing a clean black and white interface with numerous widgets and customization options. Unfortunately, it will receive only two major software updates and three years of security patches.

A Budget-Friendly Nothing Smartphone with Technical Compromises

Powering the CMF Phone 1 is the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 5G chipset, crafted on a 4nm process. It’s paired with 8GB of RAM (along with 8GB of virtual RAM). For storage, you get 256GB, which can be expanded by up to 2TB via a microSD card.

The camera setup includes three photo sensors:

  • A 50MP Sony main sensor, 79° field of view, f/1.8, EIS;
  • A 2MP x2 portrait sensor;
  • A 16MP selfie sensor.

Nothing opted once morest including an ultra-wide-angle sensor and instead included a depth/portrait sensor. The phone is powered by a 5000mAh battery supporting 33W fast charging. 20 minutes of charging provides up to 50% battery life. The phone also supports 5W reverse wireless charging.

The Nothing CMF Phone 1 is priced at €239, available on the Nothing website and Amazon. The phone is available in black, light green, and orange. The first two colors have a plastic finish while the latter features a leatherette coating.

The brand Nothing is best known for its headphones and smartphones. But some time ago it launched CMF, a brand dedicated to entry-level products. The latter is now launching into the smartphone market, with a model 100 euros cheaper than the Nothing Phone (2a) : le CMF Phone 1.
