The European Innovation Scoreboard 2024 is released today: Austria successfully retains its first place position from last year.
Vienna(OTS) – “Since taking office, I have pursued the goal of further improving Austria as a base for scientific research. Now, a milestone confirms the success of our work: we are ranked sixth in the European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS). This result demonstrates the success of our research The system is attractive and competitive and confirms the lasting impact of our initiatives in recent years,” said Federal Minister of Education, Science and Research Martin Polaschek. “Now we must consistently continue on the path to success we have chosen.”
The EU innovation leader in 2024 is Denmark, narrowly replacing Sweden in second place, followed by Finland and the Netherlands. The “Strong Innovators” group is led by Belgium, followed by Austria, Ireland, Luxembourg, Germany, Cyprus, Estonia and France. This means Austria can retain last year’s sixth place. Between 2017 and 2024, Austria’s innovation performance grew by +4.6 percentage points.
Austria ranks above the EU average in ten of the twelve innovation dimensions and still ranks first in a comparison of EU countries in the innovation dimension “intellectual capital”. Austria also received top marks for individual indicators such as public sector R&D expenditure (ranked 2nd), public-private publications (ranked 3rd) and a high proportion of foreign PhD students (ranked 4th). These developments show that Austria’s long-term strategic path under the RTI 2030 strategy is bearing fruit.
“To reach the top five, we need a strong commitment to the Austrian location. Our RTI policy must remain growth-oriented. Research, technology and innovation are key location factors and the basis for our prosperity.
Development of global rankings
In global comparisons, the EU ranks fifth overall, behind South Korea, Canada, the United States and Australia. The innovation performance of South Korea, Canada and the United States declined slightly, while the innovation performance of the European Union and Australia improved. Trailing the EU in global comparisons are China, Japan, Brazil, Chile, India, South Africa and Mexico. China and India both moved up one spot.
The European Innovation Scoreboard is the European Commission’s annual report on countries’ research and innovation performance. A country’s performance on the EIS is determined by 32 individual indicators covering 12 dimensions.
