According to data from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the highest percentage of dengue fatalities on the continent are found in six South American countries: Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, Colombia and Ecuador. Between them, they account for up to 98% of the cumulative deaths.
During 2024, the Americas region has recorded more than nine million cases of dengue in the first six months, when in 2023 there were just over four million cases for the entire year.
«Six countries account for 98% of all fatalities in the Americas: Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, Colombia and Ecuador. These are the countries with the highest mortality rate from this disease. We should not wait to reach a situation of fatalities to take measures. It has been a characteristic of the Government of President Nayib Bukele to do what is necessary to take care of the population, we must redouble our efforts,» said the Minister of Health, Francisco Alabi.
According to data from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Health Information Platform (PLISA), to date Brazil has recorded 4,269 deaths; Argentina, 359; Peru, 203; Paraguay, with 222; Colombia, 88; and Ecuador with 46 deaths.
In the case of the Central American region and Mexico, the country with the most fatalities is Mexico, with 26 deaths; followed by Honduras, with 21; Guatemala reported 15; Panama, 12 deaths; and El Salvador with three deaths.
