“Not a single tank but…” –

In recent days, images and videos of Stromboli and Etna have been making the rounds on the web, attracting the attention of many and causing concern among residents. “Those of Stromboli and Etna are two activities that are putting the Catania INGV observatory to the test. It is very tiring to keep up with these intense activities. At the moment there are absolutely no particular dangers linked to extreme variations but the fact remains that, being in the summer period, they must be followed with great attention”. This is what the volcanologist of the Catania INGV Mario Mattia told AdnKronos. “With regard to Stromboli – he adds – there is the ordinance on the beaches, to be followed with great care, on possible large landslides that might cause small tsunami waves while for Etna there is a risk also for those who go hiking in the high mountains. Also for Etna – Mattia observes – the greatest danger is that of the fallout of volcanic ash, this time on the eastern side. Etna towns such as Zafferana and Santa Venerina are covered as Catania was a few days ago”.

“Around 10 am this morning – the volcanologist says – we recorded a decrease in Strombolian activity, tremors and lava fountains on Etna and things are slowly returning to normal, even if we cannot predict whether there will be other explosive activities”. “The situation – Mattia highlights to AdnKronos – is one of attention because, I repeat, especially in the summer there are many more people around also considering the thousands of tourists”. “Between Etna and Stromboli – finally clarifies the volcanologist from the INGV of Catania – there are no connections. There is no single reservoir between the two volcanoes that have different origins. The geological area in which they are located is obviously similar but there is no connection”. “The coincidence – concludes Mattia – is a problem, if you like, only for those who have to work there and have to manage the entire emergency phase both in Stromboli and on Etna if I think for example of Catania with what the fall of ash entails on the normal operations of the airport”.
