Local media reports in Iran indicate that Masoud Pezeshkian defeated Saeed Jalill in the second round of elections held in the country on July 5.

As of Saturday morning, July 6, authorities had counted more than 30 million votes, with Pezeshkian getting more than 17 million and Jalili more than 13 million, according to results published by the agency.

More than 61 million Iranians were called to the polls on Friday to decide which of the candidates will serve as president of the Islamic Republic of Iran for the next four years.

Pezeshkian, who received 42.5 percent of the vote in the first round, advocates cooperation with the West to ease sanctions imposed on Tehran.

Early elections in Iran are to fill the vacancy left by President Ebrahim Raisi (1960-2024) who died in a plane crash on May 19.
