Lower Saxony: Explosion in asylum home! One dead, two police officers in hospital | Regional

Buchholz – **Fire disaster at a refugee shelter in Buchholz (Harburg district)!**

On Monday morning, police officers are said to have arrived due to an argument. The situation escalated, a resident was handling a flammable liquid which suddenly exploded. First, a room caught fire, then several residential containers were engulfed in flames.

The situation at the facility on Bremer Strasse in Buchholz is still very chaotic. Around 20 ambulances are already at the scene. Rescue helicopters have also been deployed.

**The fire department arrived with a large contingent and extinguished the flames. A total of 20 people are said to be injured. Eight of them had to be taken to the hospital. One man, presumably the arsonist, died in the fire. He is believed to be Ethiopian.**

**According to initial reports, social workers noticed a strange smell around 11 a.m. and alerted the police. They smelled gasoline in the accommodation. When a senior inspector wanted to check the room, the resident ignited the flammable liquid, causing an explosion in the building.**

As a result, the accommodation caught fire. Several people were injured, some seriously, including a police officer. A lifeless person was also found in the building, but his identity has not yet been established.

The injured were treated on site and taken to nearby hospitals. The police officer, who was badly burned, is already in a hospital. All available fire, rescue and police forces are currently deployed at the scene.
