Dissatisfaction among the French on election day

Six out of ten French people had already cast their vote at 5 p.m. in the election, which may have the highest turnout in the country in over 40 years. But among voters there are divided opinions regarding who should win.

– I am angry at the government, and especially at the president and that he has taken this irresponsible risk, says doctor Fréderic Maillard from Tours, referring to Emmanuel Macron’s decision to call new elections.

Opinion polls indicate that Marine Le Pen’s far-right party National Front (RN) will also win the second round of elections on Sunday. But even if the RN is in the lead, it is not certain that the party will achieve a clear majority. This might mean that there will be troubled times in French politics in the future.

– We will not be able to take the subway or the train. RN’s opponents will do everything to show their displeasure, says Nicolas, who will not give his last name.

– The country is faced with three radically opposite views of society. There is the far right, there is Macronism, which in my view also has dangerous and dictatorial tendencies, and then there is the left, which is also not great, says pensioner Olivier Grisal.

Fréderic Wallet, who works in the construction industry, says he cannot identify with either option and threw a blank ballot into the ballot box.

Ranaivoatisan Voahirana works in health care and says she is almost certain that RN will win the election.

– People will not bother to hide their racism anymore, says the health worker, who himself voted for Macron’s party.
