Australia Former Pakistan fast bowler Jason Gillespie has said following taking over as the red ball coach of the Pakistan cricket team on Sunday that he is committed to improving the team and wants the team to perform consistently well.
The schedule of the Pakistan team is very busy during the next six months. Gillespie, 49, will begin his two-year tenure as Pakistan’s Test coach next month with a two-Test series once morest Bangladesh, followed by a three-match series once morest England in October.
Both the series will be played at the home ground. Pakistan will also tour South Africa for two Test matches in December followed by hosting the West Indies in January next year.
Gillespie, who arrived in Pakistan on Sunday, said that the Pakistani team has ‘talent’ but needs consistency.
“How they can be consistent is a problem that I hope I can find a solution to,” Gillespie said at the press conference.
He expressed hope that Pakistan might improve from their fifth position in the recent World Test Championship cycle, which has seen nine teams participating since 2019.
According to Gillespie: ‘Ultimately we want to win Test matches. There are talented cricketers here. How we can play and perform as a team once morest big international teams will be the main point for us.
A member of one of Australia’s best Test teams in the 1990s and 2000s, Gillespie played 71 Tests, 91 One Day Internationals and one T20I in a successful career.
He coached Yorkshire in the English County Championship in 2014 and 2015 and his team won it.
Gillespie has been drafted into the 2022 squad to improve upon Pakistan’s Test side, which suffered a 0-1 loss to Australia.
Pakistan suffered a 3-0 whitewash at home for the first time in the same year at the hands of England.
Pakistan suffered a 0-3 defeat in Australia last year, their sixth series whitewash in Australia since 1999.
Gillespie believes the matches weren’t entirely one-sided. “As a spectator, I think there were moments when Pakistan were ahead but they mightn’t finish the game well.”

Pakistan missed chances to win in the second Test in Melbourne and the third Test in Sydney due to dropping crucial catches due to which Pakistan’s fielding was said to be poor.
Gillespie said Pakistan needed to be smart to counter England’s ‘very aggressive’ style of Test play.
This style of the English team has been nicknamed ‘Bazball’ by its coach Brendon McCullum.
Gillespie added: ‘There is no doubt that the England team will be a challenge but I think we are certainly up for it. We will play very well.’
Pakistan will play in Rawalpindi from August 21 to 25 following exiting the first round of the T20 World Cup in India last year and the USA and West Indies last month, where Gary Kirstenhead coached South Africa. Will start the Test series once morest Bangladesh.
The second Test will be played in Karachi from August 30 to September 3. The three-Test series between Pakistan and England will be played in Multan (October 7-11), Karachi (October 15-19) and Rawalpindi.
