Two Czech citizens, a 27-year-old and a 32-year-old, wanted to go on a tour together on Saturday via the Attersee via ferrata to the Mahdlgupf in the municipality of Steinbach am Attersee.
The two of them started the via ferrata at midday, which faces west and leads to the summit of the Mahdlgupf over a height of regarding 900 metres. They made slow progress and following a short time of climbing they had run out of water.
At around 4:50 p.m., at an altitude of 950 meters, the two were so exhausted and dehydrated that they might not continue and called the emergency services. At this point, they had already been climbing the via ferrata for several hours in the blazing sun.
After the emergency call was received, the Steinbach/Weyregg mountain rescue service, the “Libelle Klagenfurt” police helicopter and the Gmunden Alpine Police were alerted. At around 6:15 p.m., the Libelle crew managed to rescue the Czech citizens unharmed with a rope and fly them into the valley. According to their own statements, the two had underestimated the length of the tour and the heat.
Tourist had to be picked up from Traunsteinhaus
An alpinist also had to be rescued on the Traunstein because she was too exhausted. The 42-year-old Czech woman started her mountain tour on the Traunstein at lunchtime and reached the Traunsteinhaus at 1,580 meters above sea level shortly following 6 p.m.
At this point, the hiker was already severely dehydrated and exhausted due to the heat and humid conditions, which meant that she would not have been able to make the descent on her own. The Gmunden mountain rescue service, the emergency helicopter “Martin 3” and the Gmunden Alpine Police were notified.
After receiving emergency medical treatment, the crew of the NAH “Martin 3” allowed her to board the helicopter independently and she was flown to the Salzkammergut Clinic in Gmunden for further treatment.
German hiker collapsed at “Jausenstein”
During the third operation, a 56-year-old German citizen had to be rescued. He wanted to go on a mountain hike from the Taferlklaussee towards the Hochleckenhütte on Saturday. At around lunchtime, he set off on trail number 826. At around 3 p.m., the hiker reached the so-called “Jausenstein” at an altitude of around 1,300 meters.
Since he was probably already very dehydrated and exhausted at this point due to the heat and humid conditions, he probably collapsed there briefly. An emergency call was made, whereupon the Traunkirchen mountain rescue service, the emergency medical helicopter “Martin 3” and the Gmunden Alpine Police were notified.
The crew of the emergency helicopter was able to quickly find the exhausted hiker. He was rescued with a rope and flown to the Salzkammergut Clinic in Vöcklabruck.
