Riga’s bike paths have been extended by 8 km

The installation of bicycle infrastructure has been completed on three routes: in Āgenskalns and Ķīpsala, in Mežciems, as well as in Čiekurkalns and Mežaparks.

In Pardaugava, the length of bicycle paths has been increased by 1.3 kilometers.

In Mežciems, two one-way bicycle lanes were built on Gaiļezera Street, which added 1.1 kilometres to the existing bicycle infrastructure network. At the same time, other traffic regulation measures were taken here – from now on, the permitted speed on Gaiļezera Street will be 30 kilometres per hour. Parking spaces were also marked, which will improve traffic safety.

The connection between the Čekurkalns and Mežaparks quarters was created by implementing bicycle infrastructure on Viskaļu and Ezermalas streets. Two one-way bicycle paths were built on these streets, which increased the existing bicycle infrastructure network by 5.6 kilometers.

“We continue to work on developing comfortable and friendly infrastructure for cyclists in Riga, creating new connections with both the microdistricts and the city centre. The nearest plans also include the creation of bicycle paths and improvement of the infrastructure on Purviša Street, Dzirnavu Street and 11 November Embankment, where the existing section of the bicycle path will be extended,” explains Olafs Pulks, Head of the Traffic and Transport Committee.

Work is also underway to introduce main bicycle routes in cooperation with neighbouring municipalities.
