The EU executive said that Chikungunya is not endemic in the EU, but noted that climate change has caused an increase in mosquitoes that transmit serious diseases.

Health.- The European Commission authorized this Friday, July 28, the first vaccine in the European Union once morest the Chikungunyaa virus transmitted through mosquito bites, and which will be permitted for those over 18 years of age, the institution reported in a statement.

The EU executive said that Chikungunya is not endemic in the EU, but noted that climate change has caused an increase in mosquitoes that transmit serious diseases and that a recent report by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) confirmed the presence of the tiger mosquito, capable of transmitting the virus, in 13 countries of the EU and the European Economic Area.

Brussels has authorised the vaccine for sale with the approval of the 27 EU countries, following the European Medicines Agency gave its approval, and now it will be up to the governments to decide the conditions for its administration.

The European Commission also announced that it will fund a pilot programme to eradicate the dengue mosquito in Cyprus, the only EU country where it has been found, with 500,000 euros.

Specifically, the program will use the sterile insect technique, which consists of breeding and releasing a large number of sterilized male insects into the wild with the aim of having them die without reproducing with the females of their species.
