In Iloni’s Wonderland in Haapsalu, the Kertu Sillaste exhibition “Fairy Tales from Kila-kola” can be seen until the end of the year.

The exhibition features illustrations of fairy tales, which, as the name of the exhibition suggests, are made from kila-kola, i.e. old ice cream sticks, puzzle pieces, buttons and other knick-knacks that tend to be left over.

The pictures displayed on the wall of Iloni’s Wonderland and in the playroom on the third floor are Sillaste’s illustrations for the Latvian fairy tale “Vanataadi kinnas” and Setu’s fairy tale “Funny Skulls”. Sillaste said that he wanted to hang the pictures at the children’s viewing height during the exhibition in Wonderland. Although this means that children can also start to touch the pictures with their hands, this is not a problem according to Sillaste: he has photos of kila-kola pictures that were used to illustrate fairy tale books, and even if the smaller pieces tend to fall off the pictures, they can always be stuck back.

According to Sillaste, when illustrating the books, he did not actually glue the pictures together, but placed the tokis loosely on the base paper and photographed them. Now the pictures that have entered the exhibition have been recreated based on these photos. “I wanted to make these images visible to children in real size,” said Sillaste.
