A new monsoon gyre is expected to affect Central America from June 26 to 30, 2024, although it will be less intense and shorter in duration than the previous one. The monsoon gyre or the Central American gyre are low-pressure cyclonic systems that usually appear during the rainy season in Central America, which runs from May to November.
Significant increases in rainfall are expected in Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Belize, especially from 27 to 29 June, with daily accumulations potentially reaching 100 mm in some locations. Beginning on 30 June, rainfall is expected to decrease in these areas, although high accumulations may persist in Guatemala.
From Wednesday, June 26 to Friday, June 28, Costa Rica and Panama will experience the rainiest days, while from Friday, June 27, maximum temperatures will drop due to the presence of cloud cover in high and medium areas of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua, remaining warm in the rest of the region. Minimum temperatures will be cool throughout Central America during this period.
