THE problem of traffic jams is considered a common problem in big cities. The Politically Literate Generation (GMP) is trying to find a solution together with Padjajaran University (Unpad), to resolve the problem of traffic jams.
“Therefore, with this issue, big cities in Indonesia should start looking for ways to improve their transportation systems to be effective and integrated,” said transportation activist Adriansyah Yasin Sulaeman in the Academia Politica program, an idea from GMP and Unpad, quoted on Friday, July 5, 2024.
According to him, congestion is closely related to social and environmental issues. There should be a shared awareness of this issue, especially how congestion contributes to bad emissions in urban areas.
Political Science Lecturer at Padjadjaran University Mudiyati Rahmatunnisa gave an example of traffic jams in Bandung. According to her, there is an increase in traffic jams caused by the increase in motor vehicle ownership.
“Not only that, the speed of road traffic in the metropolitan city of Bandung has reached 11 km/hour, which is far below the ideal limit of 20 km/hour,” he explained.
As a result, said Mudiyati, economic losses due to traffic congestion are equivalent to approximately Rp4.63 trillion/year. Planologist and transportation planning practitioner Amanda Deviana sees that overcoming congestion requires collaboration between parties.

“The arrangement of urban transportation facilities should also pay attention to three things, namely the integration of mass transportation modes because transportation modes cannot stand alone; pedestrian and cyclist facilities available on every sidewalk with safe, decent, and comfortable conditions; implementation of government policies to help solve traffic congestion problems in the city,” he explained.
On the other hand, Executive Director of the Youth Participation Foundation, Neildeva Despendya Putri, hopes that the Academia Politica program can encourage young people to understand the importance of politics in everyday life. According to her, every political participation will have an impact on national and social life.
“To make politics relevant to young people, Academia Politica is designed with visual themes that are currently trending in popular culture such as Barbie, Squid Game, Harry Potter, and Avatar,” said Neildeva.
Neildeva believes that Academia Politica is able to provide experience in formulating public policies from the perspective of each stakeholder, such as NGOs to the Government. The goal is to prepare young Indonesian leaders, so that when they sit in the leadership seat, they understand that environmental issues are priority issues for the earth in the future.
“Academia Politica is a safe space and a place for young people to learn to actively participate by gaining the skills of agenda setting, negotiation, argumentation, and making policy recommendations or policy briefs,” he concluded. (Z-6)
