From July 4 to 7, the World Cup in wheelchair fencing is taking place in Warsaw, the capital of Poland, where two athletes from Daugavpils are competing – Oleg Garkul-Gurevich and Dmitry Valainis. Oleg represents Latvia in the epee discipline, and Dmitry competes in both epee and foil.

On July 4, Oleg Garkul-Gurevich showed excellent results, winning a silver medal in the epee discipline. In his group, he won three out of five fights, taking third place. In the matches for reaching the next round, Garkul-Gurevich defeated Hungarian Istvan Gergely with a score of 15:5, then in the quarterfinals he defeated Frenchman Joan Peter with a score of 15:10 and Thai Paralympian Visit Kingmanawa with a score of 15:9. In the semifinals, he defeated Briton Dmitry Kout with a score of 15:11. In the decisive fight for gold, he lost to Iraqi representative Amar Ali with a score of 14:15, which brought him a well-deserved second place.

Dmitri Valainis showed his best side in Group C, winning three out of six matches. In the round of reaching the next stage, he lost in the quarterfinals, taking fifth place in the final standings.

Immediately following the World Cup in Warsaw, the World Championship in Category C in wheelchair fencing will begin, where Dmitry Valainis will continue to compete in both epee and foil.

Both athletes are accompanied throughout the competition by their coach Alexander Plyaskin, whose role in their success is invaluable.

Let’s wish our athletes good luck and hope for new outstanding achievements!
