The Netherlands beat Turkey 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League on Saturday 6 July, with goals from De Vrij in the 71st minute and an own goal from Mert Müldür in the 76th, following having struggled a lot in the first half and going into the break down (0-1). The Dutch team will play England on 10 July.
Dutch coach Ronald Koeman had hinted before the match that his team would have to try to control the game through possession in order to cope with the intensity and emotion of the Turks’ game, always supported by their fans.
His team tried in the first minutes and had some advantages in terms of possession and Memphis Depay had a good foray into the area in the first minute. However, little by little, with a less elaborate game, Turkey began to take control of the match.
The goal came in the 34th minute, starting with a corner kick from the left.
In the 70th minute, Weghorst had a good chance with a shot that goalkeeper Mert Günok had to deflect for a corner. The goal came from a short shot when Depay’s cross found the head of De Vrij, who beat Günok (1-1). The Dutch continued to press on and in the 76th minute they scored the second goal, scored by Mert Müldür through an own goal.
England qualified on penalties
The penalty shootout also qualified England for the semi-finals on July 6 and eliminated Switzerland from Euro 2024.
England took the lead. Palmer scored. Switzerland followed. Pickford saved Akanji’s shot. Then Bellingham scored, with a perfect penalty. As did Schär shortly followingwards. Or Saka made it 3-1 for his team halfway through the shootout. Shaqiri made it 3-2. There were two shots left for each. Ivan Toney scored the next. So did Amdouni. And Alexander Arnold sealed the win.
The match started well for England, who took the initiative and tried to find the Swiss goal, but without any clear chances. In the second half, Switzerland improved and tried to get more into the English box. Embolo first tested Pickford, but his shot was easily saved by the English goalkeeper. With 15 minutes remaining, Embolo put his team ahead. Saka responded with a goal from outside the box. This result sent the game into extra time and following a goalless period, the game went to penalties.
Although the English were pointed out by many analysts as one of the favourites for the title, their play and results have not inspired euphoria. They made it through the group stage and a goal from Jude Bellingham saved them from being eliminated in the round of 16.
