In addition, as part of the expanded program in 2024, at the same time a new festival and awards event will be launched in Indonesia, which will screen all selected films from the nominees.
Indonesia was chosen as the next country to host the Alternative Film Project following the success of its inaugural edition in 2023, which was held in Kazakhstan.

Alternativa Film Project Head Liza Surganova said, “Alternativa Film Awards serves as a tool to support the development of the local film industry by celebrating filmmakers from underrepresented communities who have important stories to tell and have the potential to influence the cultural and social landscape. Cinema is a powerful vehicle for change and Alternativa’s ambition is not only to challenge injustices in the film industry, but also to bring real progress to the world – which is why it is so important to share the selected films with the public through our new Festival initiative.”
“As we take Alternativa to new markets each year and build on the ongoing initiatives year following year in each of our locations, we hope this nomadic approach will allow us to engage a wider international audience. We are incredibly proud of the success stories that emerged in our first edition, and we look forward to expanding our work across Indonesia and the wider region,” he continued.
In 2023, the Alternativa Film Project supported a number of filmmakers with 350 works received in 25 countries. Five films were highlighted, namely Spotlight, Future Voice, Alter, Nativa, and Shorts.
The Nativa award-winning Nepali documentary by Rajan Kathet and Sunir Pandey, No Winter Holidays, has used its prize money to organize a theatrical distribution of the film in Nepal, along with screenings for the community in the region. They have filmed and screened the film for younger audiences in schools and universities.
The project highlights themes such as: poverty, gender roles, the gap between rural and urban areas, cheap migration to supply economic resources, and isolation.
In addition, Alternativa Film Labs organized three training programs for filmmakers of various ages and skill levels, attended by 37 filmmakers, 12 young people, and 7 tutors from Europe and the United States (US).
From this program, five winners will get the opportunity to join Pop Up residency in Europe from Tatino Films or participate in EFM Toolbox program and also get travel grant from EFM. (Z-1)
