BB.lv: New British Prime Minister Starmer

While the vote count was still ongoing, Volodymyr Zelensky had already congratulated Keir Starmer on his victory and thanked Rishi Sunak for their joint work. “I look forward to working closely together to strengthen the partnership between Ukraine and the UK and restore international peace and security,” Zelensky wrote on his social networks.

“Ukraine and the UK have been and will remain reliable allies. We will continue to defend and promote our shared values - life, freedom and the rules-based international order. I wish the new government every success both in its domestic affairs and in strengthening the UK’s leadership on the world stage,” the Ukrainian leader is confident.

Keir Starmer is a lawyer by training and became head of the Public Prosecution Service in 2008. However, he entered politics at the age of 50 and was elected to parliament in 2015.

He largely disagreed with the policies of then party leader Jeremy Corbyn and even resigned from the party’s leadership, but became Labour’s spokesman on Brexit.

His position on the war in Ukraine was clear. Starmer first visited Kyiv in February 2023. During a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, he assured that Ukraine would always have the “unwavering support” of his party. He also visited Bucha during his visit.

“It is incredible to see the evidence of the atrocities that I saw this morning. Pictures of civilians on the outskirts of Kyiv, blindfolded, with their hands tied behind their backs. There must be justice in The Hague, and there must be proper reparations in the reconstruction of Ukraine,” the politician said following what he saw.
