Venezuela recorded its lowest inflation in 39 years in June, according to Nicolás Maduro

Caracas, Jul 1 (EFE).- Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Monday that June ended with the lowest inflation in 39 years, without referring to the figure that, he said, will be published by the Central Bank (BCV).

“The month of June that closed yesterday was the month with the lowest inflation in 39 years in the Venezuelan economy, the economic miracle is happening and it is very important because it allows the family, the businessman, the entrepreneur to plan with more certainty (…) I cannot give the data because I am not going to take away the scoop from the BCV,” said the president during his weekly television program.

He also said that the first half of this year has been “great news” in terms of economic growth, without giving figures.

“If we slow down and bring inflation to a minimum, if we maintain economic growth, if we increase investments and credits to entrepreneurs and have a sustained exchange system (…) we are on the rails of developing an economic model, which I have said will be the wonder of South America,” he added.

Venezuela accumulated inflation of 7.8% between January and May of this year, the lowest figure for that period in the last 12 years, according to data released on June 7 by the BCV.

On average, prices of goods and services rose by 1.5% in May, reflecting an improvement compared to April, when inflation was 2%.

“All measurements indicate that inflation continues to decrease, a palpable result of the new economy and the efforts of all Venezuelans,” the issuing body explained in a brief press release.

Venezuela emerged in December 2021 from a hyperinflation that it entered in 2017 and that, for four years, reduced the value of the bolivar, the official currency, as well as the confidence of citizens in it, so they unofficially adopted the dollar in an attempt to protect their income.
