Medical and technical teams on Monday (1/7) evening began evacuating patients from the European Hospital in Gaza in Khan Younis City. This is because Israel is likely to launch a ground attack.

The Israeli army did not specifically order people in the hospital to leave. However, medical teams began evacuating patients, injured people and medical equipment.

The measures came as the hospital was in one of the areas that received text messages from Israeli authorities warning them to move to other locations. Medical sources told Anadolu Agency that medical teams had transferred several patients and injured people to Nasser Hospital in central Khan Younis.

They added that the hospital’s technical team also moved some medical equipment and supplies out of fear that they would be damaged if the Israeli army attacked the hospital. An Anadolu Agency correspondent reported that the displaced people also dismantled their tents around the hospital and moved to another place following receiving an evacuation order from the Israeli army.

The Gaza European Hospital is one of the few hospitals still operating in the Gaza Strip, as the Israeli army systematically targets most of the hospitals in Gaza. The series of Israeli attacks on the territory have left most of the hospitals inoperable.

The Israeli army on Monday ordered residents in eastern Khan Younis to leave immediately, declaring the area a dangerous war zone. Israel called on people to go to an area known as the humanitarian zone in the western part of the city, known as Al-Mawasi area.

Having ignored UN Security Council resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire, Israel has faced international condemnation amid its ongoing brutal attacks on Gaza since Hamas’ offensive on October 7, 2023. Some 37,900 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed and around 87,060 others injured since October 7, according to local health authorities.

More than eight months following Israel’s war began, much of Gaza has been devastated amid a tight blockade on access to food, clean water and medicine. Israel has been accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The ICJ in its latest ruling ordered Israel to immediately halt its operations in Rafah. The area is home to one million Palestinians who took refuge from the war before they were attacked on May 6. (Ant/Z-2)
