In response to the intense meteorological activity affecting various regions of Chile, Vice President Carolina Tohá announced the declaration of a preventive emergency from the Coquimbo Region to the Ñuble Region. This measure is implemented to anticipate and expedite the necessary actions before significant damage occurs in the affected areas.
“The declaration of Preventive Emergency means anticipate to make decisionshaving the facilities of a disaster zone, but before any possible damage. speeds up execution of tasks, hiring and purchasing,” he added.
The declaration of preventive emergency covers six regions of the country, where the deployment of government authorities has been arranged to supervise and coordinate the response efforts. In the Coquimbo Region, the Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela, will travel to assess and support the area. On the other hand, the Minister of Social Development and Family, Javiera Toro, is already in the Valparaíso Region.
In the O’Higgins Region, the Undersecretary of Defense, Ricardo Montero, will be in charge of coordinating the necessary actions, while the Minister of Defense, Maya Fernández, will go to the Maule Region to supervise the operations. Since Tuesday, the Minister of Public Works, Jessica López, has been present in the Biobío Region, one of the most affected, and in the Metropolitan Region, the Acting Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Manuel Monsalve, will be in charge of the corresponding actions.
During the morning, Manuel Monsalve headed the Committee for Risk and Disaster Management (Cogrid) in the Biobío Region. In his report, Monsalve detailed that there are 1,500 homes affected in the region, in addition to 300 people isolated in the commune of Alto Biobío, belonging to various communities. He also reported that 1,500 educational establishments in the region have suspended their classes due to adverse conditions.
