Mets beat Yankees in Subway Series

Mark Vientos hit a pair of solo homers and the New York Mets held off a furious rally by the AL East-leading New York Yankees to win 9-7 in the season opener of the Subway Series.

Vientos led off the second and fourth innings with homers off reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Gerrit Cole (0-1). He became the 12th Mets player with at least two homers in a game of the New York Classic.

Harrison Bader and Brandon Nimmo also homered off Cole.

In Detroit, Tarik Skubal struck out seven in as many innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1.

Skubal (9-3) allowed three hits and walked one in a performance that included a batter being hit by a pitch.

DOMINICAN Jose Ramirez hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and the Cleveland Guardians won their seventh straight game, beating the struggling Baltimore Orioles 10-8.

Gunnar Henderson, James McCann, Colton Cowser and Anthony Santander all hit home runs for Baltimore, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the reigning AL East champions from losing their fifth straight game.

BEN RORTVEDT hit a two-run homer and finished with four RBIs for the Tampa Bay Rays, who routed the Seattle Mariners 11-3 to claim their seventh win in nine games.

Seattle got homers from Ty France and Mitch Garver as the AL West-leading Mariners fell to 2-6 on a nine-game road trip.

IN CINCINNATI, Bryan Reynolds extended the longest active hitting streak in the majors to 22 games, hitting a two-run homer in the first inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-5.

Reynolds’ streak is the longest by a Pirates hitter since 2003, when Kenny Lofton went 26 straight. Jason Kendall and Aramis Ramirez went 23 and 22 games, respectively.

VLADIMIR GUERRERO had a pair of doubles, George Springer added a two-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays snapped a seven-game losing streak by beating the Boston Red Sox 9-4.

The Blue Jays gave Dominican starter Brayan Bello seven runs in the third inning, including Guerrero’s drive into the center-field triangle to produce two, before Springer hit a home run that catapulted the ball into the Boston bullpen.

JAPANESE Shohei Ohtani opened the game with a home run and broke the tie with a single, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3.

Led by Ohtani and Freddie Freeman, the Dodgers won for the seventh time in nine games. The NL West leaders are 50-31 at the halfway point of the season.

In other results, the Astros beat the Rockies 5-2 and the Brewers beat Texas 3-1.— AP
