Widely acclaimed by activists, Sophie Rohonyi is elected president of Défi

Défi activists voted on Friday to elect a new president.

Two candidates had submitted their candidacies: Sophie Rohonyi, a former federal MP, and Emmanuel De Bock, the outgoing group leader in the Brussels Parliament.

Schaerbeekois Elias Ammi announced on Friday followingnoon, a few hours before the vote, that he was withdrawing his candidacy in favor of Sophie Rohonyi’s.

The activists have made their choice. Sophie Rohonyi, 37, from Rhode-Saint-Genèse, has been elected national president of Défi.

She was widely acclaimed, receiving 79% of the votes from activists.

“I would like to thank the members of DéFI for their trust,” Sophie Rohonyi said in a press release. “I am aware of the immense responsibility they are giving me and the immense task to be accomplished. It is together that we will transform the sympathy that many have for our liberal and progressive project into genuine support. A necessity in the face of threats that weigh more heavily than ever on French-speakers. I will therefore try above all to unite all the party’s vital forces, so that DéFI once once more becomes an essential political force that restores faith and hope in politics and the future. Renewal is now.”

Genappois Baudouin Decharneux, a professor at the ULB, becomes president of Défi in Wallonia.

Sophie Rohonyi becomes the second woman to hold the position of president of Défi, following Antoinette Spaak, president of the FDF between 1977 and 1982. Sophie Rohonyi was supported by the vast majority of the party’s leading lights, creating a sort of synthesis between the Maingain and De Smet clans.

She defines herself as a progressive liberal and does not advocate a rapprochement with the MR, while her competitor, Emmanuel De Bock, said he was nostalgic for the PRL-FDF federation.
