The hacking of the Temporary National Data Center (PDNS) poses a serious threat to citizens’ important data. Member of Commission IX of the House of Representatives from the PKS faction, Netty Prasetiyani, emphasized that someone must be held responsible for the incident. A comprehensive audit must be carried out on the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemenkominfo) and BSSN.

“It is truly concerning that this institution is provided with a budget of IDR 700 billion from the APBN, but its data security is weak and it does not have adequate backup,” said Netty, Wednesday (3/7)

The magnitude of the problems caused by hacking must be handled seriously by the government.

“Law enforcement must get involved and conduct a comprehensive audit of the institution. Don’t let a problem of this magnitude evaporate without any official being held accountable,” he said.

Netty also pushed for the expedited implementation of derivative regulations of Law No. 27 of 2022 concerning Personal Data Protection. Especially for parties holding public data, including government agencies that are negligent in maintaining the security of public data.

“There must be strict sanctions to prevent people from carelessly collecting data,” added Netty.

According to him, one of the things affected by the hacking was Indonesian public health data.

“Why don’t we learn from experience? Our health data is so easy to hack. Previously in 2021, it was suspected that BPJS Kesehatan data was leaked and traded on the dark web, then followed by the leak of E-HAC data and now health data at PDNS 2 has also been hacked,” he explained.

In addition to disrupting domestic health services, leaked health data is vulnerable to misuse. Leaked personal data can be used to steal passwords, do online loans, break into financial services and so on. A patient with an infectious disease will also be subject to social isolation if their illness is revealed to the public. (Z-11)
