A panel of judges has postponed the scheduled sentencing for former US President Donald Trump in a hush-money case until September 18, 2024.
Trump was originally scheduled to be sentenced on July 11. His legal team had asked for the sentencing hearing in the hush-money case to be canceled following the Supreme Court ruled Monday that former presidents have partial immunity for actions during their terms in office.
Judge Juan Merchan said Tuesday that he would issue a ruling on Trump’s legal case on Sept. 6. If a verdict is needed, the judge said, it would be handed down on Sept. 18.
In May, a jury found Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records as part of an alleged scheme to silence claims of extramarital sexual relations during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump became the first former president ever to be convicted of a crime.
Prosecutors say Trump reimbursed the hush money paid to Michael Cohen, an adult film star who claims he had an affair with Trump. The money, paid on the eve of the 2016 election, was covered up by labeling it as legal fees.
Shortly following the Supreme Court ruled on the president’s immunity claim, Donald Trump took to social media to celebrate. “A huge win for our constitution and democracy,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Proud to be an American!”
However, the decision only temporarily halts the trial process until the judge makes his decision in September. (BBC/P-5)
