Latvian schoolchildren show the lowest results in math exam

In the English language exam, students scored an average of 63.9%, while in mathematics – 43.2%. The results in these subjects are lower than in the 2022/2023 academic year, when the average result in English was 66.1%, and in mathematics – 50.5%. At the same time, the average result in the Latvian language exam is 59.1%, which is 1% more than in the previous academic year.

The 9th grade exam this academic year was considered passed if the student received at least 10% of the maximum grade. As in the previous academic year, the largest number of students dropped out in the mathematics exam – the achievements of 654 students were assessed below 10%. However, there are 172 fewer of them than in the 2022/2023 academic year.

Overall, this year there were fewer schoolchildren who did not reach the 10% threshold in one of the subjects, the GCSO concluded. If last year 10% was not achieved in 1059 examination papers, then this year the minimum grade was not achieved in 915 examination papers.

The GCSO will further clarify the results of the centralized exams for 9th graders following processing the final results and re-evaluating the contested papers. Official statistics on student success in exams in the 2023/2024 academic year are expected to be known at the end of August, the GCSO promises.

According to the GCSO calculations, a total of 55,353 examination papers were assessed this academic year.

From today, those who have completed basic school can receive certificates of passing centralized exams. On Monday, 54,438 certificates were issued, according to information summarized by the State Center for Social Studies.

The website eksameni.gov.lv, which is designed to simplify the process of obtaining certificates for passing centralized school exams, also began operating on July 1. The website is being monitored, and currently, 100 to 200 users have connected to it at the same time, the NCSO reports, adding that the website is capable of providing simultaneous service to a much larger number of users.

To ensure the availability of certificates on centralized exams, the loading and verification of certificates in the system began yesterday evening and at night, explained the GCSO. According to information on social networks, several students learned their results on Sunday evening.

In addition, it is possible to obtain certificates of centralised examinations on the state portal of electronic services “Latvija.lv”.
