Sulyok bei Van der Bellen – 2024-07-05 21:51:53

Hungary-Austria

Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok visited his Austrian counterpart Alexander Van der Bellen in Vienna on Wednesday. He was received with military honors in Vienna’s Hofburg.

Hungarian-Austrian relations are excellent, both countries are linked by a strategic partnership and friendship, stressed Sulyok. The Hungarian head of state recalled, among other things, the founding of the Collegium Hungaricum in Vienna, the first Hungarian cultural institution abroad, 100 years ago. “With this visit, we are continuing a long tradition of regular exchange between the heads of state of our two countries – an expression of close economic, cultural and human relations that Hungary and Austria have maintained for centuries,” agreed Van der Bellen.

On the issue of traffic restrictions at Burgenland border crossings, they agreed on the common goal of solving the problem as quickly as possible and ensuring that border traffic flows smoothly. To this end, constructive negotiations are currently taking place between the governments.

In addition to the working meeting with Van der Bellen, a meeting was also held with National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka. The topics included the war in Ukraine and the protection of the rights of nationalities, as well as the problem of growing anti-Semitism in Europe. “Hungary has zero tolerance for anti-Semitism. We stand by Israel because it has the right to defend itself,” Sulyok made clear. He condemned terrorism in all its forms, but added that the Palestinian people should not be equated with Hamas.
