Two men faced justice for stealing Q20 and a cell phone, for which they were sentenced by a judge.

Two men who stole Q20 and a cell phone from a person who was practicing sports in a sector of zone 12 of the capital on January 14 were sentenced to prison and a fine, judicial sources reported on Wednesday, July 3.

José Francisco López and Jeremías Sontay were sentenced to 2 years in prison, commutable at a rate of Q5 per day.

Both men submitted to the special procedure for accepting charges, so the trial was short and the sentence minimal.

On January 14, the two suspects were caught red-handed in a sector of Zone 12 of the capital, when they robbed a man who was exercising of his belongings, according to the investigation.

Both were charged with committing the crime of robbery.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP), the victim was robbed of his cell phone and Q20, the accused tried to escape from the place; however, they were captured by agents of the National Civil Police (PNC).

Accused narrates the events

On June 28, López testified before Judge Marjorie Azpurú of the Fifth Criminal Sentencing Court and described how the events occurred.

“On Sunday, January 14, I was in El Trébol having a few drinks. I passed by the La Reformita neighborhood, in front of the fire station. My partner and I put our hands in the man’s bag and took his phone and Q20. I regret what I did and I promise not to do it once more,” López said.

López’s statement differs from the victim’s story, as she said that the accused cornered him and carried out the assault under threat.

The judge referred to the victim’s testimony and Sontay confirmed what the victim had said.

“My friend and I were in El Trébol drinking alcohol. We walked by the fire station and saw the victim walking. We asked him for Q1, but since we were drunk, I took the Q20 from his pants pocket and my friend took his phone. We ran away and a patrol captured us,” Sontay said.
